Acema Importations meets Canada’s growing appetite for refined international cuisine with an expansive and thoughtfully curated portfolio. From pantry staples to specialty indulgences, its lineup includes artisan pastas, premium olive oils, aged balsamic vinegars, cookies, confections and a whole lot more.
Eighteen years ago, François Bibeau and Marc Fortin acquired Acema from its original founder, who launched the brand in 1992. Since then, the team has traveled the world in pursuit of the finest culinary offerings.
Known for its innovation and steady introduction of new products, Acema has evolved into one of the nation’s most trusted names in gourmet imports. Today, it sources from over 10 countries, bringing global flavours together under one roof. Every decision is driven by curiosity, intuition and a passion for discovery, resulting in a collection of exceptional finds that surprise and delight both retailers and consumers.
At the heart of this evolution is a service model defined by consistency, care and collaboration. Acema’s reputation for reliability has made it a go-to partner across various retail formats. From the moment an order is placed to when it’s delivered, every team member is focused on exceeding client expectations. Sales representatives follow a consistent visit schedule, enabling clear communication and proactive inventory management. Retailers especially value the professionalism and predictability this approach delivers, particularly when handling large, complex orders that require meticulous attention, often one case at a time.
“Our goal has always been to ensure that once Acema delivers a customer, we want to increase the number of products delivered to that store. This has been an important part of our organic growth,” says François Bibeau, president.
Whether navigating the high-volume demands of major retailers or supporting the personalized needs of gourmet boutiques, operational discipline is central to Acema’s identity. Drawing on his roots in the beer industry, where product availability is non-negotiable, Bibeau brings the same level of rigor to food distribution. The business is built on accuracy, reliability and high fill rates, all supported by a structured four-week service calendar.
The rare and intentional dual-market presence, serving major retail chains and independent specialty boutiques, has paid off. A few stores now carry more than 400 Acema SKUs, a clear testament to the breadth of its portfolio and the trust it has earned from retailers.
Acema’s path to retail success in Canada blends strategic reach with grassroots persistence. One approach focuses on collaborating with head office teams to secure listings and integrate products into store planograms across major banners. The other, equally crucial, especially in Acema’s early years, relies on personal connection: visiting individual stores, meeting owners and managers face-to-face and earning trust from the ground up.
This hands-on approach has fueled some of Acema’s most impressive growth stories. One standout is a leading specialty food boutique in Montreal, known for its curated selection and influence in the gourmet market. Eighteen years ago, Acema had just 20 SKUs in the store. Despite the boutique’s prestige and spacious layout, its presence was minimal.
When the owners took over the account, they saw an opportunity to expand. Recognizing the store’s high standards and diverse offerings, they focused on building the relationship through consistent service, a broad product range and reliable operations, which gradually grew Acema’s presence. Today, the boutique carries over 500 Acema SKUs, a testament to the brand’s growth and a long-term partnership rooted in shared values.
Guided by three essential principles—the pursuit of authenticity, the discovery of innovative brands and a commitment to clean ingredient lists—Acema Importations is more than a distributor; it is a driving force behind growth and innovation in Canada’s fine food sector. By pairing thoughtfully selected imports with dependable service, Acema helps retailers deliver the much sought-after brands and the unique finds that set their shelves apart.
