As consumer expectations shift across South America, brands are under pressure to deliver packaging that performs better, looks sharper on shelf and advances circularity goals. Flexible packaging has become a strategic lever, but real progress requires more than switching materials. It demands partners who understand production realities, move quickly and bring technical rigor to every stage of development.
For many global and regional brands, that partner is Petropack S.A., the Argentine, family-owned flexible packaging manufacturer that has grown into a regional reference point for recyclable innovation, service, and reliability.
“We see sustainability as the priority, delivering recyclable materials, recycled content and greener processes that support customers,” says Sebastián Bourdin, sales director.
A Family Business with Regional Scale
Founded in 1986 by two brothers who remain the company’s sole shareholders and active leaders, Petropack today employs around 700 people and operates five plants in Entre Ríos. The family-run structure gives clients something increasingly rare: direct access to decision-makers, rapid response times and a partner-level relationship rather than a commodity supplier dynamic.
Today, the company caters to leading brand owners across food, beverage, home care, with a recognized leadership position in high-durability pet food bags. Its reach spans Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, Uruguay, and a widening circle of South American markets, with international expansion accelerating as demand for recyclable, high-performance structures grow.
Process-Driven Technical Partnership
What sets Petropack apart is its insistence on acting as a technical partner rather than a supplier. Every project begins with a clear diagnostic: reviewing production lines, understanding constraints, and identifying the exact mechanical and barrier performance a package must withstand. The company then produces prototypes, conducts sealing and aroma-retention trials and runs aging tests. These steps are supported by advanced in-house laboratories that measure migration, seal strength, mechanical resistance, permeability, color accuracy, and real-time production parameters. The capabilities underpin certifications including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and FSSC 22000.
Printing receives the same treatment. Petropack prints exclusively in flexography and is a regional pioneer in Extended Color Gamut (ECG) technology, enabling consistent, vibrant tones without constant ink changes, improving efficiency and visual impact across long runs.
One of Petropack’s most notable recent breakthroughs is the redesign of yerba mate packaging, addressing a long-standing consumer frustration: spillage caused by fine powder and loose herbs. The company developed a laser-cut opening system that allows a clean, controlled pour and forms a functional spout for ease of use. The conventional paper-plus-film laminate packaging was replaced with a specially formulated polyethylene mono-material that mimics the look and feel of paper while remaining fully recyclable. The design received Argentina’s Sello del Buen Diseño (Good Design Seal) and is advancing toward both local and international patent protection.
Circular Operations and Future Capacity
Sustainability at Petropack goes beyond materials. One of its plants is dedicated 100 percent to polyethylene recycling, allowing reclaimed material to be reintegrated into production. A reverse-logistics program collects scrap and excess film directly from client plants for reprocessing to reduce waste and support circularity targets.
To meet rising demand for recyclable structures, the company is opening a new plant and adding two extrusion lines, expanding capacity by more than 30 percent and enabling the development of next-generation high-barrier materials.
“Packaging must do three things well: protect the product, respect the environment, and deliver a better experience for the consumer,” says Bourdin. “Our vision is to be a partner that helps brands transition into the future of packaging reliably, responsibly, and with innovation.”
With a rare mix of family-led commitment, technical depth, and regional scale, Petropack’s offers brands a partner capable of meeting today’s pressures while quietly engineering tomorrow’s breakthroughs.
