Plant Ahead’s journey into dairy-free cheese didn’t begin with a corporate projection or a calculated market play. It started in 2019 when Stéphanie Schott, a veteran in the food business, was having dinner at a friend’s house. She noticed how an everyday meal turned into a balancing act of nurturing and caution.
At mealtimes, Stéphanie observed her friend serve identical plates of food to both her twins, despite their differing dietary needs. It was a necessity that weighed heavily on their mother’s heart. One twin had severe, life-threatening allergies, and because toddlers naturally share everything—utensils, toys, surfaces, even saliva—the risk of cross-contamination was high and ever-present. To minimize that danger, the entire household operated under strict allergen-free rules. But the emotional cost was clear. The mother mourned the limitations this placed on her healthy child’s diet, knowing she had to restrict one for the safety of the other.
We honestly believe there’s no point in making an incredible product if no one can find it. We’ve worked hard over the past few months to rebuild and strengthen our distribution so people don’t have to travel miles just to find our cheese
At the time, Stéphanie was executive vice president at Weins Foods, a Quebec-based company known for sourcing high-quality, cost-effective ingredients for the foodservice industry. She knew the system wasn’t built for families like her friend’s. And when it came to cheese, the options were especially limited. Most dairy alternatives leaned on common allergens like nuts and soy or overly processed ingredients. The results rarely delivered on taste, texture or trust.
Moved by what she witnessed, Schott approached Weins Foods’ founder and CEO, Samuel Weinstock, with a pitch for product expansion.
“What if we create something better? A cheese alternative that has all the characteristics of real cheese like melting, stretching and grating and tastes good enough that people don’t realize it is plant based?”
That’s how Plant Ahead was created as a subsidiary of Weins Foods.
“Our goal is to bring back the joy of sharing a meal,” says Stéphanie. “We have created something so safe and delicious that everyone at the table can enjoy it together, no matter their allergies or dietary needs, because food should bring people close, not force them apart.”
Function Meets Flavor in Every Slice
Recreating the texture, melt and mouthfeel of traditional cheese in a dairy-free version has been one of the food industry’s persistent challenges. More than taste, it’s a question of chemistry and culture. That’s why Plant Ahead teamed up with food scientists and European master cheesemakers, including Greek families with more than 250 years of feta-making tradition, to tackle the problem at its roots.
While European cheesemakers excel at centuries-old recipes, few work with cheddar-style profiles or American cream cheese, the varieties used predominantly in Canadian and U.S. kitchens. Creating a clean-label cheddar that could stand up to local expectations took over a year of trials. After numerous iterations, Plant Ahead settled on versions that delivered both flavor and functionality.
The same goes for its mozzarella. It stretches beautifully, withstands high-heat ovens and is versatile enough to be used in frozen pizzas and baked cheesecakes. Parmesan comes as a wedge, allowing customers to grate, shave or dice it. The feta, available in both block and cube formats, is brined in sea salt for a creamy, salty finish. Even the blue cheese holds its own, adding indulgent richness to dips or pastas, yet firm enough to anchor a charcuterie board.
All products are free from common allergens and are kosher, halal and non-GMO. Ingredients are clean, with no more than eight or nine components. Coconut oil provides the fat base, while potato starch ensures body and mouthfeel. To address nutritional concerns, each cheese includes 17 percent natural calcium. This attention to safety and simplicity means even children with severe food allergies can enjoy cheese without sacrificing either nutrition or taste.
“I always had my friend’s daughter in mind,” says Stéphanie. “She shouldn’t have to give up calcium just to stay safe. We worked hard to make our cheeses functional and fortified, without compromising flavor.”
Every cheese is field-tested and the formulations evolve based on how they’re used. One team even tested the cheese in a fondue, something few plant-based options survive without separation or clumping. Plant Ahead’s passed.
Getting Plant-Based Cheese into Everyone’s Hands
Plant Ahead maintains an intentionally lean structure, with just 15 people driving operations across the U.S. and Canada. Instead of building a sprawling internal sales force, the company focuses on trusted relationships, working with a network of experienced brokers and distributors who understand local markets and can move with agility as the brand scales.
In Quebec, we’re working with Horizon Nature and Nantel, alongside our broker Nutri Impact. In Ontario, we're been distributed by Newport Gourmet, and we're working hard on finalizing a new partnership, it's very promising!
On the western front, we are excited to have recently partnered with International Pacific Sales Ltd., a renowned company that we have the pleasure of already working with in the food service industry. They will be responsible for our line and distribution through Horizon Grocery + Wellness. Even Costco has joined ranks, offering bulk one-kilogram packs of Plant Ahead’s feta, giving families an allergen-friendly option without compromise.
“We honestly believe there’s no point in making an incredible product if no one can find it,” says Stéphanie. “We’ve worked hard over the past few months to rebuild and strengthen our distribution so people don’t have to travel miles just to find our cheese.”
Many new agreements are already in motion and the team views the summer of 2026 as the launchpad for a thoughtful growth phase, aiming to maintain a strong Canadian footprint and steadily expand its U.S. presence. Leading the charge south of the border is Jeffrey Strah, vice president of sales and marketing, whose focus will be on building strategic retail relationships and amplifying the brand’s presence in key markets.
Nurturing Trust with Every Slice
One of the most anticipated U.S. releases is a vegan mozzarella ball crafted to replicate the creamy bite and soft texture of Italian bocconcini, making it ideal for Caprese salads or antipasto platters. Other upcoming innovations include a vegan cheesecake and a dairy-free paneer (cottage cheese) tailored to the needs of South Asian cuisine.
Plant Ahead is also investing in customer engagement. Marketing efforts led by the agency Le Bon Plan ensure timely responses to everything from allergy concerns to store availability. If a customer requests confirmation of allergen safety, the team shares ingredient sheets. That high-touch approach is a defining feature in a space where many brands keep consumers at arm’s length.
Schott is especially proud of the brand’s deep resonance with women, particularly mothers navigating the daily realities of feeding families with diverse dietary needs. Today, nearly 80 percent of Plant Ahead’s core customers are women between the ages of 25 and 45. Many are primary grocery decision-makers seeking safe, nutritious and flavorful options. To strengthen this connection, the brand actively participates in community-driven platforms like The National Women’s Show and prioritizes outreach efforts that make every customer feel seen, heard and supported in their food choices.
By bringing cheese back to the table for people who thought they’d never enjoy it again, Plant Ahead is redefining what plant-based alternatives can be. The lineup continues to be expanded with new launches while remaining rooted in its mission of offering clean ingredients, everyday functionality and great taste.
At its core, Plant Ahead always remains true to its founding mission, ensuring no one has to choose between safety and satisfaction when it comes to food. It’s not about trends; it’s about making food that brings people together.
