Dr Jenna Macciochi, Director of Science and Innovation What market gaps influenced Ancient + Brave’s approach to supplement sourcing and formulation standards?
Ancient + Brave was founded in 2018 by Kate Prince in response to a clear gap in the supplement market. Interest in medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil and collagen was rising, yet available products did not consistently meet a high standard. Quality varied, and ingredient sourcing lacked transparency. Prince introduced high-quality, sustainably sourced collagen alongside a focused range of functional products rooted in ancient wisdom, traditional ingredients and respect for nature. This foundation is complemented by a commitment to innovative, science-backed ingredients, carefully selected and formulated to deliver meaningful, evidence-led benefits.
The company calls it ‘The Brave Standard,’ its internal framework governing product development, supplier selection and operational decision-making from the ground up, reflecting its position as a mission-driven brand where sustainability is embedded in everyday decisions.
“For us, sustainability is not something that’s been layered on in response to trends,” says Dr Jenna Macciochi, director of science and innovation. “It has been part of our mission since conception, embedded in how every product is developed and in the partners we choose.”
How does ingredient sourcing and manufacturing oversight support product quality and sustainability objectives?
Collagen is sourced within the EU, with marine collagen certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). An in-house quality team conducts on-site supplier audits against documented requirements, while ingredient selection remains rigorous, focusing on sustainability and excluding endangered species. Third-party testing extends beyond regulatory thresholds, and formulations are designed to efficacious doses, ensuring environmental responsibility coexists with performance.
For us, sustainability is not something that’s been layered on in response to trends. It has been part of our mission since conception, embedded in how every product is developed and in the partners we choose.
As scientific and environmental data evolve, ingredients and suppliers are reassessed to remain aligned with current evidence.
Manufacturing follows the same discipline. Ancient + Brave operates its own production unit in Sussex and works with audited third-party partners under identical standards. Packaging prioritises material reduction and recyclability, with ongoing efforts to eliminate unnecessary components and reduce environmental impact as the business scales. Foundational formulations are intentionally designed to support a more considered approach to use.
From Formulation to Daily Use
Why does consistent daily intake influence the design of functional nutritional supplement products?
Consistent intake is scientifically recognised as important for achieving optimal outcomes with some nutritional interventions, which is why the brand positions its products as daily rituals rather than occasional supplements. Taste, preparation and usability are treated as functional requirements that support regular use, whilst the products have that added benefit of pause within increasingly busy modern lives.
The portfolio reflects three categories. The collagen range includes bovine and marine sources of type I collagen, Noble Collagen, a type II formulation designed to support joint health and Radiant Collagyn, an innovative vegan alternative. Blends incorporate functional ingredients into drink formats, including cacao with collagen, matcha with Lion’s Mane, coffee with collagen and vegan cacao with Chaga mushroom. Targeted supplements address needs such as sleep, omega-3 intake, magnesium, ashwagandha, hydration, creatine and gut health in capsule and powder formats.
True Biome, the company’s gut health formulation, illustrates this approach. Instead of relying on a conventional probiotic model, the formulation combines a prebiotic fibre, a gut-lining support ingredient and a postbiotic to support the gut ecosystem more broadly. Low FODMAP certification, a patent-pending formulation and ongoing consumer trials reinforce its positioning. Feedback from individuals with sensitive digestion continues to inform product refinement.
To what extent is clinical research shaping future supplement development and health innovation strategies?
Quietly Building the Evidence
Consistency across sourcing, manufacturing, formulation and research earned Ancient + Brave recognition as the Top Sustainable Supplements Manufacturer in the UK for 2026.
It is expanding clinical research and academic collaborations, with a particular focus on female physiology, an area historically underrepresented in data known as the female health gap and a growing issue in the UK and EU. The brand's expansion into international markets applies the same standards without dilution.
Ongoing work remains largely behind the scenes. Clinical trials, academic partnerships and community-led research support the company’s emphasis on evidence generation. Industry language often references clinical validation; Ancient + Brave prioritises conducting the underlying research required to support those claims. It links planetary health with human health outcomes, reinforcing sustainability as a system-level consideration rather than a marketing layer.
