Food Business Review

For most nutraceutical supplements, the journey from factory to pharmacy shelf is an unseen test of survival. Temperature shifts, transport time and interactions between active compounds quietly erode a product’s strength long before a customer opens the bottle. Vitamin C is the clearest example. Its molecular structure is so sensitive that even mild heat can destabilise it if the finished product does not respect the physicochemical properties. Yet under European food regulations governing the supplements, producers are not required to demonstrate that their ingredients remain active throughout a product’s lifespan. That gap between what labels promise and what consumers actually receive is what pushed John Kottaris to establish Pharmacros, a company that applies pharmaceutical-grade controls to nutritional supplements. It all began when Kottaris turned to collagen during recovery from an injury. The more he researched, the clearer it became that food regulations ensured hygiene and basic compliance. But they did not require stating how long the actives stayed viable or whether the formulations delivered the benefits they claimed. The issue wasn’t the ingredient itself. It was the absence of a system that required transparency to verify performance. “I realised if a supplement is meant to help people, it must behave like a scientific formulation that performs consistently from the first dose to the last. Anything short of that breaks consumer trust,” says Kottaris, founder and CEO. For Swiss-based Pharmacros, that principle defines every decision that follows. It works solely with EUapproved branded raw materials supported by clinical studies. Every batch is retested in-house against its certificate of analysis before formulation begins, because it believes that ingredients cannot be trusted unless they are traceable and scientifically supported. Stability is treated with the same rigour because it directly affects the consumer experience. Temperature shifts and interactions between active compounds are the primary reasons supplements lose strength. Pharmacros produces its liquid formulations at controlled room temperatures below 21 degrees Celsius. These conditions enable up to 11 combined, sensitive ingredients to remain stable together, allowing the final product to maintain a fully homogenised profile batch to batch. Ensuring that reliability led to one of the company’s most decisive steps. In 2020, Pharmacros shifted manufacturing to an ANSM-approved pharmaceutical GMP facility in Montélimar, France—a site authorised to produce liquid medicines. This move provided the level of uniformity physicians expect when recommending a product and ensured that it always behaves exactly as formulated, regardless of its travel route or storage duration.

Top Food Supplements Contract Manufacturer and Private Label Producer in Europe 2025

Hymato Products Ltd. is renowned for its collection of humic and fulvic acid-based products, enriched with nearly all essential minerals. Guided by CEO and chemical engineer Dr. János Csicsor’s vision to improve health, the company applies decades of scientific research to create safe, effective formulations that enhance wellbeing. Hymato develops food supplements, cosmetic formulations and functional food products while offering contract manufacturing and packaging services. “We develop complex products with several ingredients that work together to solve real health problems,” says Csicsor. This integrated formulation sets Hymato apart from manufacturers that rely on single-ingredient products. Through its in-house laboratory, the company creates multi-ingredient supplements that enhance nutrient absorption and health. Bringing Big Ideas to Life Hymato operates on two strong pillars: in-house product development and toll manufacturing. Through its research laboratory, it ensures rigorous quality control and humic acid analysis while collaborating with multi-level marketing companies, Hungarian firms and foreign organisations to deliver complete expertise from formulation to finished product. What makes Hymato different is its willingness to work with small and emerging companies that have product ideas but lack the production resources. While most toll manufacturers require minimum orders of about 100,000 bottles, Hymato offers flexible, small-batch production of 10 to 100 units, enabling new brands to test and refine products. The company provides scientific support that helps new businesses launch and grow confidently. Raising the Bar on Bioavailability Recognising the potential of liposomal production in improving nutrient absorption, Hymato invested in specialised equipment and advanced from laboratory trials to pilot-scale production. Liposomal technology is used for ingredients that don’t dissolve in water, since such compounds are absorbed poorly by the body. Hymato focused on key non-soluble nutrients like Q10, curcumin, glutathione and resveratrol, using liposomes to improve their absorption.

Shaping The Future Of European Food Innovation

The European market for nutritional supplement manufacturing, plant-based and gourmet alternative foods, and contract manufacturing of food supplements has seen robust growth in 2025. Rising health awareness, demand for sustainable products, and the expansion of private label solutions have driven consumers to seek preventive health options and natural ingredients, supporting steady growth in the dietary supplements sector. Plant-based foods and beverages have also gained significant momentum, as advances in texture and taste attract mainstream and flexitarian consumers. Manufacturers are responding by investing in advanced production technologies such as fermentation and extrusion, ensuring consistent quality and scalability. The regulatory environment remains stringent, with the European Food Safety Authority enforcing rigorous standards for ingredient safety and labelling, which fosters consumer trust and supports product innovation. Contract manufacturing and private label services are increasingly popular, offering brands flexible, compliant, and efficient routes to market without the need for large-scale infrastructure investment. Retailers and start-ups are partnering with specialist manufacturers to launch new products, leveraging tailored solutions for branding, packaging, and regulatory compliance. As the year draws to a close, the sector is marked by a strong focus on sustainability, ethical sourcing, and expanding product ranges to meet diverse consumer preferences across Europe. This edition highlights some of the most influential names in the European food industry, both companies and individuals. One such company is Pharmacros, which produces clinically backed supplements that behave like controlled formulations rather than food products.
